Camilla Morrison

Costume Designer — NIGHTMARES ARE DREAMS TOO

Camilla Morrison is a Costume Designer, Draper, Theatre Artist, and Arts Educator. She currently serves as the Costume Designer/Instructor for the Theatre Arts Department at the University of North Dakota.  She earned her BA in Theatre from Salisbury University in Maryland. She believes not only in the power of storytelling through live performance to connect and inspire, but also in its power to heal and reflect personal growth.  Through costumes I share life experiences, at which I invite the audience to look and understand from another perspective.

Camilla is originally from Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. She recently received her MFA in Costume Design from Louisiana State University (LSU) and is currently based, in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

NIGHTMARES ARE DREAMS TOO was a self-created project, and was produced at LSU in January 2017.

This piece grew from a desire to share some facets of what it means to be a woman in the world today.  To share an experience with others through a media that is not completely straightforward, and allows the viewer to interpret and connect individually.  I began the process by writing poetry about the experiences and feelings that I wanted to share through my designs. Then I researched other feminist artwork and performance art, which lead to the decision to share the costumes on live models, rather than on dress forms. I also looked at photographs from nature and different aspects of nature that aren’t always considered beautiful, like pictures of fungus and discoloration of natural materials.  I thought about how a feeling could be shown through costume or by viewing the experience of the model wearing the costume and carefully added these elements into the designs.
