AIDA was directed by Gary John LaRosa for Montclair State University, October 2016.
We wanted to tell the story of the title character, Aida, the powerful, the strong, and the courageous. We also wanted to show how Aida deals with social and cultural obstacles while being torn between her country and her love, Radames, the Egyptian Captain. Our team established a vision that supported the historical setting, while incorporating the modern rock sensibility found in Elton John’s music. It was important that the creative team consistently kept a high contrast world between the rich and powerful Egyptians and the struggling and oppressed Nubians. Through my research, I was able to incorporate silhouettes from Ancient Egypt and Nubia while adding modern qualities.
