THE LONG WALK was directed by Frances Rabalais for the Pittsburgh Opera in January 2018.
We felt that the world of the play needed to be unsteady, flexible, familiar and unfamiliar. It should have a potential for disaster, create moments of detachment, and appear fortified but still penetrable. There should be the sense of suspended weight, weightlessness and constant shifting. It was important that our audience be aware that this story is occurring in the main character’s, Brian’s, psyche. The director was passionate about creating an alienating, bordering on sci-fi, experience for Brian. She wanted him to feel detached from both family life and the war in Iraq. This inspiration sparked research into the connection between space and time, and ultimately led us to create a subliminal space connecting between two points or two realities; a wormhole.
