ALKESTIS was directed by Phillip Gates for CMU School of Drama in February 2018.
Our team was interested in the theme of duality and blurring rules. Alkestis’ anticipated death and surprise return to life during the play creates an uncertainty about life and death. This led our director to ask what other aspects of the production could exist in such a space: one where rules are bent, lines of separation blurred, and where elements of seemingly opposite realms are collaged together. In the most tragic or most comedic moments of the play, one senses the opposite element bubbling under the surface, and when the two combine the audience must grapple with a complex experience which moves beyond boundaries that were previously unquestioned.
